Coming home can be a big transition, even when everyone is happy to be there.
The bags are inside, but sleep, hunger, energy, emotions, and the rhythm of the day may still be somewhere else. At the same time, home creates its own list of demands: unpack, buy groceries, answer messages, restart routines, and prepare for whatever comes next.
We made it back to California a few days ago after a long trip home from Germany. The journey itself went more smoothly than it had any right to. Papa remembered, while we were booking the last leg, that we like to stay near the airport the night before we fly. That small reminder changed the whole shape of the return.
Instead of rushing straight into an international departure at an ungodly hour, we drove to Frankfurt the day before. It was a long, hot ride in a nine-seater van, but that evening we found an outdoor club near the hotel with a pool and dinner. The children got to move and splash before bed, and we arrived at the airport calmly for our 11:40 flight the next day.
The flight followed the day instead of the night, so nobody slept much. After landing, collecting our bags, and getting the car, we still had three hours of traffic between us and home. Both children fell asleep in the car and somehow stayed asleep until morning.
Except morning came early.
Our daughter woke around 3 a.m. and our son around 5. We made milk rice for breakfast, one of our family favorites, and let the day be gentle but real: time in the yard, a bike ride and play at the river, sushi with our friend Jenny, groceries, and the pool.
When our 3 year old began melting down from tiredness around 1 p.m., we did not try to push through the plan. We got in the car and used a tried-and-true car nap.
The small home cues mattered too. Our son played in his secret garden, found clay, and made a candle holder. We lit it at dinner that night, even though it was hot outside, and again the next morning. It was a tiny, cozy signal that we were home.
What Needs Grounding First?
What helped me was not asking, “How do we get completely back on track?” It was noticing what felt furthest from normal.
Bodies may feel off: hunger comes at odd times, energy is low, or everyone is restless.
Rhythm may feel off: sleep is scattered, mornings start too early, or the usual order of the day has disappeared.
Emotions may feel close: small requests cause tears, everyone is short-tempered, or ordinary decisions feel hard.
Home may not feel like home yet: the space feels cluttered or disconnected, and everyone seems to be moving separately.
You do not have to solve every category. Choose the one creating the most friction right now.
Lower the Bar Before Adding More
A transition day has less capacity than an ordinary day. Before adding a helpful ritual, cross out or postpone one nonessential expectation.
For us, that meant leaving the bags partly unpacked, using the car nap, and letting familiar things do more of the work.
Four Familiar Anchors
1. Familiar food. Choose one meal or snack everyone recognizes. Buy it, repeat breakfast for dinner, or serve familiar pieces instead of making a full meal.
2. Daylight and movement. Go outside for 10–20 minutes with no destination. The yard, porch, bikes, water, or a walk to the corner all count.
3. One home cue. Bring back a sensory signal already built into your life: a candle, song, bedtime book, bath, table setting, or tea.
4. Let tiredness lead. Cancel an errand, make the afternoon quiet, take the car nap, use convenience food, or move bedtime earlier.
The goal is not to restore the whole routine. It is to help everyone feel a little more like themselves.

Your moment for today: Name what feels most unsettled, choose one familiar anchor that matches, and let one other thing wait until tomorrow. I would love to hear what your anchor is in the comments or by reply.
A fuller life, one small moment at a time.
I love this. We have our own Eurotrip this fall and hope I remember some of your tips when we come home! ❤️
